| First Group of Slann Slaves and Slaver |
One of the units that I remember vividly from my youth are these adult babies in oversized diapers. Slann armies make great use of vassal troops and these lobotomised eunuchs are one such unit.
These are no Unsullied from Game of Thrones though, in fact they are quite the opposite weighing in at a mighty 4.5 points each although they do have WS 3 which is better than some other Levy and Slave troops in other armies.
The slaves I have painted so far are all pre-slotta from the original Slann scenario releases. There are two other sculpts from the later slotta tab releases who will be joining their castrated brethren shortly. The actual sculpts on these are lovely, I believe they were sculpted by the Perry twins although I am happy to corrected on that. The two issues I have faced is that availability is very low, meaning I have paid upwards of £6 a piece for a 4.5 point model and that due to age many are now suffering from lead-rot and oxidisation problems.
They are lead by a Slann Slaver, another pre-slotta sculpt who interestingly doesn't have a profile in the Warhammer Armies list. There is however a unit entry for a Slann Animal Handler in the Slann Mercenary list that appeared in White Dwarf 96 that fills this role.
These guys join my Venom Slann and the so far lonely Troglodyte - group shot below.

The army is looking good so far. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the pre-slotta Slann Slaves are really nice miniatures, as were a lot of pre-slotta miniatures, especially from the Perrys. The 4.5 points for difficult to find miniatures is always going to be annoying, but the pre-slotta Slaves are easier to find than the slotta based ones.
The Slann Slaver in 3rd Edition was normally just a hero miniature, usually I used a Level 5 as the better heroes ended up leading the Slann. The Slave Master miniature also doubles up well as an animal handler, and with a little conversion work could work as a low level, non-palaquin, Slann mage.
